St Woolos Cemetery was Britains first public cemetery and therfore part of the local history of Newport. It is a tranquil place; a green oasis in the midst of a metropolis. It is a vast expanse of land; 15 acres in total, just a short distance from Newport town centre. It has some remarkable Victorian architexture and sculptures. I wanted to share the fantasy of the architexture, sculpture and Victorian art through these photographs.

There is a part of the cemetery that local people know as 'Jews Wood' and although I lived near I had no idea why it was called this. I found this intriguing and further investigation led me to the jewish chapeland separate graveyard. I managed to gain access and two of the pictures are from this chapel; the books in the bookcase and the table with the open prayer book. Two other pictures were internal shots of other chapels. The four pictures of statues were night shots and there are four pictures taken in the daylight.

I would like to thank Mr Charles Dare, Superintendent of St Woolos Cemertery, and his staff for their help, support and expertise.
